A key member of the Jesup business community, Joseph H. Wilkins came to Jesup with members of the Wilkins family who worked with the Atlantic Coastline Railroad.

The J.H. Wilkins Company was located on Broad Street and was the WalMart of its day. Items for sale included chickens in a pen out back as well as dry goods, grocery items and even undertaking supplies. The Wilkins were one of the first families in Jesup to have electric lights and held a Christmas party to show off their good fortune. The game of the evening was 52, a dominoes based game.
